Abstract
A postal questionnaire was successfully used to determine general practitioner views about the quality of the health care services available to their patients. In the case of hospital services, 75 of the 112 respondents (67 per cent) chose orthopaedics and 52 (46 per cent) chose ophthalmology as services in need of improvement. Other hospital‐based services, chosen by at least ten general practitioners, were gynaecology, gastroenterology/endoscopy, medicine for the elderly, radiology/ultrasound, psychiatry and physiotherapy. Only 74 general practitioners chose community services, with health visiting being chosen by 25 respondents, district nursing by 24, physiotherapy by 20 and chiropody by 18, as being in need of improvement. The survey was intended to provide a basis for a dialogue between clinicians, managers and general practitioners, about how the quality of services could be improved and how they might be developed in the future.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore the struggle for entry and career success of the early pioneer women accountants in Great Britain and its former colonies the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Design/methodology/approach
A career crafting matrix guides the analysis of historical information available on five pioneer women accountants in order to understand their success in gaining entry into the profession and their subsequent careers.
Findings
Despite an exclusionary environment, career crafting efforts coupled with family and organizational support enabled these women to become one of the first female accountants in their respective countries. Their struggles were not personal but much broader—seeking social, political, economic and professional empowerment for women.
Originality/value
This is the first paper to utilize the career crafting matrix developed from current female accountants' careers to explore careers of pioneering female accountants. It adds to the limited literature on women actors in accounting and may provide insight into approaching current forms of difference and discrimination.

Abstract
Background
Pandemic along with causing disruption in economy and health of the communities, has also exposed the vulnerabilities of the people and the government. Innumerable research papers reported that this is leading to an increase in psychological issues like depression, OCD, anxiety, etc.,. However, our past experiences with pandemics has shown that the survival of communities depends on the level of adaptability and change management. This study aims to observe the influence of the disruption in emotional health measured in terms of Level of Adaptability and Level of Resistance to Change as a result of Lockdown.
Objectives
(1) Assess the level of disruption in the emotional health (in terms of Level of Adaptability and Level of Resistance to Change) of the people due to this Lockdown. (2)Impact of this disruption on physical health.
Methodology
This is a cross-sectional survey of the urban Indian population. The sampling method used was the snow-ball sampling. Adaptability and Resistance to change have been considered as the measure of a person's emotional health and then correlated to their physical health.
Results
The study hypothesized that people underwent emotional disruption and that affected their physical health negatively. But our findings showed that people were happy and used this time to improve their lives and relationships. The study found age having a significant association with both adaptability and resistance to change. There was inverse correlation between Resistance to change and physical health. And the level of Adaptability was considerably high in participants who were greater than 30 years and participants who were Self-employed or salaried.
Conclusions
The disruption in the lives of people due to Lockdown has given ample time for families to reconnect and relationships to improve. People have had time to introspect and hence have adapted well to the impending crisis.

Abstract
Health care services are typically viewed as institutions or agencies offering professional care or care supervised by professionals. The concept of availability of health care services involves the degree to which persons can readily find professional care. Few scholars have considered the relevance of these notions to life-circumstances of older homebound women who experience emergent situations (ES) at home such as falls, unintentional injuries, or health problems. During a larger descriptive phenomenological study of the experience of reaching help quickly, 33 of 40 homebound women, aged 85–98 years, who were living alone, reported 57 situations of interest during open-ended interviews over 18 months. The purposes of this facet of the study were (a) to describe the life-world of women who had fortuitous help with ES at home, (b) to categorize helpers involved, and (c) to elaborate the reported influence of such situations on recognizing the risk of being unable to reach help quickly in the future. Life-world was featured by having help right now from someone on the scene. We categorized involved helpers into six types, including four previously identified types of home care helpers as well as (a) “on-the-spot” helpers, acquaintances not among the woman's home care helpers and (b) “at-this-scene-only” helpers, who were not likely to encounter the woman afterwards. In these ES, the home – not the health care institution – was the setting. On-the-scene helpers served as critical health care resources. In contrast to the typical focus on availability of health care services in a public space, availability of on-the-scene helpers in the home, a private space, was critical to the well-being of these old homebound women. This work raises new notions about availability of health care services for older homebound women and offers new perspectives on the key support network concepts of proximity and frequency of contact.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine emotional labour in the work of frontline staff (FLS) of the Canadian Blood Services' Cord Blood Bank (CBB), contributes to understandings of emotional labour by allied healthcare workers and suggests implications for healthcare managers.
Design/methodology/approach
Qualitative interviews with 15 FLS were conducted and analyzed as part of a process evaluation of donor recruitment and cord blood collection in Canada.
Findings
Emotional labour with donors and hospital staff emerged as a vital component of FLS' donor recruitment and cord blood collection work. Emotional labour was performed with donors to contribute to a positive birthing experience, facilitate communication and provide support. Emotional labour was performed with hospital staff to gain acceptance and build relationships, enlist support and navigate hierarchies of authority.
Research limitations/implications
The results indicate that FLS perform emotional labour with women to provide donor care and with hospital staff to facilitate organizational conditions. The findings are based on FLS' accounts of their work and would be enhanced by research that examines the perspectives of donors and hospital staff.
Practical implications
Attention should be paid to organizational conditions that induce the performance of emotional labour and may add to FLS workload. Formal reciprocal arrangements between FLS and hospital staff may reduce the responsibility on FLS and enable them to focus on recruitment and collections.
Originality/value
This paper addresses a gap in the healthcare management literature by identifying the emotional labour of allied healthcare workers. It also contributes to the cord blood banking literature by providing empirically grounded analysis of frontline collection staff.

Abstract
Purpose
This study centers the reflections of principals across the USA as they navigated the overwhelming stress of closing and reopening schools during a global pandemic. Specifically, the authors explored how school principals addressed self-care and their own well-being during the pandemic.
Design/methodology/approach
This research study is part of a broader qualitative study conducted by 20 scholars from across the USA in Spring 2020 and organized by the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE). This national research team conducted 120 qualitative interviews with public school principals in 19 different states and 100 districts. As part of this team, the authors coded and analyzed all 120 transcripts in NVivo using a self-care framework.
Findings
The responses from the participants capture some of the complexity of self-care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors found evidence of both negative and positive sentiments towards self-care that will be described in five major themes. For the tensions with self-care, the authors developed two primary themes: leaders eat last and keep from falling off the cliff. For the demonstrations of self-care, the authors also developed three primary themes: release the endorphins, people need people and unplug from work.
Originality/value
Although researchers have identified the stressors and reactions of principals during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, little is known on how principals engaged in self-care practices. This study aims to identify these self-care practices and offer recommendations for principals.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper analyzes how the distribution and structure of employees' attention influence idea survival in an organizational internal crowdsourcing session.
Design/methodology/approach
Data from an online internal crowdsourcing session carried out within a multinational company with headquarters in Sweden were used to explore how idea attention influenced idea survival.
Findings
Our findings indicate that the positive relationship between attention allocation and idea survival is mediated by idea appreciation, i.e. positive comments and suggestions that employees provide in response to ideas. In addition, we find that competition for attention negatively moderates the relationship between idea attention and positive comments. Finally, our results indicate that ideas are more likely to survive if they are submitted earlier in the crowdsourcing process and when the elapsed time since previously posted ideas in the session is longer.
Practical implications
This study provides organizers of internal crowdsourcing sessions with new insights about factors influencing idea survival and about potential systematic biases in idea selection due to timing and competition between ideas.
Originality/value
This paper contributes to the literature highlighting the relevance of attention-based theory in the context of crowd-based creativity and innovation management.

Abstract
This study developed a two-stage model of decision making used by healthcare providers when considering combination antiretroviral therapy for HIV-positive patients. Provider interviews and patient medical records from 10 HIV-positive patients were utilized. Four providers (two nurse practitioners and two physicians' assistants) situated in two managed care HIV clinics were studied. Newly diagnosed HIV patients were observed while interacting with their health care provider. Following the interactions, healthcare providers were given a semistructured private interview about the factors that influenced their treatment decisions. It was hypothesized that providers, when they made their treatment decisions, would initially evaluate biomedical markers followed by an evaluation of patient characteristics associated with treatment adherence. It was found that providers developed basic decision-making principles and perceived some decisions as relatively easy and others as much harder. The easiest decisions conformed to biomedical guidelines while the harder ones had substantial behavioral and nonmedical components. These were hard decisions because they were perceived as making treatment regimen adherence much more problematic. It was also found that the providers' high level of decisionmaking responsibility combined with their relatively low authority contributed to their decision-making uncertainty.
